About us

The Empire State Quarter Horse Association (ESQHA) is the New York State AQHA Affiliate. AQHA is the world’s largest equine breed registry and membership organization. ESQHA was formed back in 1962, by a group of local horsemen that wanted to promote and showcase quarter horses in our area.

Back then, as today, we believe in the quarter horse because of their vast versatility, athleticism, loyalty, and classic, well-muscled beauty. Known as the first true all- American Horse Breed, they have gained worldwide respect.

The Quarter Horse has become a staple on the ranch, in the show ring, on the racetrack, on the trail and as the perfect partner.

We, as an organization, promote the values of owning and exhibiting quarter horses. We encourage sportsmanship, family values, humane and dignified treatment of the American Quarter Horse.

We accomplish this with Clinics, Youth Organization, AQHA approved Horse Shows, AQHA Novice Show and Introductory Show, Open Horseshow Program and partnerships with local horse associations. Whether you are ready to start showing, someone who just loves American Quarter Horses, or anywhere in between, AQHA and ESQHA are here to help you make the most of those moments.

ESQHA Mission Statement
  • To develop positive participation in Quarter Horse activities in New York State in cooperation with the American Quarter Horse Association

  • To promote interest and growth in Quarter Horse ownership.

  • To respect the rights and welfare of the horses.

ESQHA Members – Get Involved with Your AQHA Affiliate

Your AQHA affiliate relies on its members to help make a difference. Here are some important reasons to consider getting involved with your affiliate. ESQHA needs you just as much as you need them!

    • Gain leadership experience through the state and youth affiliate by getting involved with your state’s board of directors and officers.
    • Volunteer at shows, especially Level 1 and Rookie shows. Gain knowledge of how shows are run, or help out as a ring steward where you’ll get firsthand experience in how classes are judged.
    • Share your ideas on how to improve your affiliate organization and be part of the decision-making process.
    • Use your professional expertise to strengthen your affiliate. Whether you’re an accountant, marketer, teacher, or have another skill—your contributions can make a real difference.
    • Introduce new events like dressage or Versatility Ranch Horse. Affiliates sometimes lack the resources to expand into specialized events—your involvement can make it happen.
    • Represent your affiliate at the AQHA Convention.
    • Meet more people in your affiliate and form lifelong friendships.
    • Take advantage of scholarship programs offered by some affiliates for youth involvement—a great way to save money for college.
    • Earn exciting year-end awards by competing at affiliate-sanctioned shows.
    • Get plugged in! Your affiliate is the best way to stay connected with Quarter Horse events happening in your state.

Getting involved is the best way to make an impact in the industry!
